Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the sunrise and sunset times?

OwlPlot uses precise astronomical calculations based on your exact coordinates. Times are accurate to within a minute for most locations. Factors like local terrain (mountains, buildings) may slightly affect when you actually see the sun appear or disappear.

Does OwlPlot work offline?

Yes! The core astronomical calculations (sunrise, sunset, golden hour, moon phases) work completely offline. Weather data and the photography score require an internet connection for real-time updates.

How is the Photography Score calculated?

The Photography Score combines multiple factors: cloud cover, visibility, precipitation chance, wind speed, and the current light conditions (golden hour, blue hour, etc.). You can customize the weights of these factors in Settings to match your photography style.

Why does the app need my location?

Location access allows OwlPlot to automatically calculate accurate sun and moon data for where you are. This data is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to our servers. You can also manually search for any location without granting access.

Can I save multiple locations?

Yes! You can save as many locations as you like. This is perfect for planning shoots at your favorite spots or preparing for upcoming trips. Saved locations appear in the Today tab for quick access.

What's the difference between Golden Hour and Blue Hour?

Golden Hour occurs when the sun is low on the horizon (about 6° above to 4° below), producing warm, soft, golden light. It happens after sunrise and before sunset.

Blue Hour occurs during civil twilight when the sun is 4-6° below the horizon. The sky takes on a deep blue color with no direct sunlight, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for cityscapes and landscapes.

How do I switch between Metric and Imperial units?

Go to Settings (gear icon in the tab bar) and tap on the Units section at the top. You can toggle between Metric (km, km/h, °C) and Imperial (mi, mph, °F).

Is OwlPlot available on Android?

OwlPlot is currently available on iOS. An Android version is in development. Follow us on social media for updates on the Android release.

Troubleshooting

Location not updating

Make sure location permissions are enabled for OwlPlot in your device settings. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → OwlPlot and select "While Using the App" or "Always".

Weather data not loading

Weather data requires an internet connection. Check your connection and try pulling down to refresh. If the problem persists, try closing and reopening the app.

App crashes or freezes

First, make sure you have the latest version of OwlPlot from the App Store. If issues continue, try restarting your device. If the problem persists, please contact us with details about when the crash occurs.
